Myra became one of the largest cities of Lycia during 5th century BC.

The impressive remnants of the antique theater, acropolis, stone-carved necropolis at the top of the hill and the sea necropolis indicate that Lycians were very experienced in the stone carving. Other parts of the antique city are coverd with 6 meters thick sand and soil. Today's Demre, which is located closeto the antique city, is konwn as the town of saint nicholas. Saint nicholas who was born in Patara, worked as the episcope in that region. He was declared a saint after his death for his helpful nature and miraculous healing abilites.

Andriake, the harbour of Myra, was one the three important harbours of Lycia. It is about 5 KM away from the current center of Demre. Saint Paul sailed away to Rome from this harbour together with Saint Lucas.
